Jesus accepts his cross
This Station is the first of the seven, three-figured sculptures. Note the determination on the faces of those handing the Cross to the Lord, the fine work in the fingers and hands; and the rock formation which will change from station to station to convey a sense of movement. The figures may be a temple worker or guard, and a figure of some degree of importance with head covering and cloak. Or perhaps they should be interpreted symbolically, the one bearded and Hebrew, the other Roman, to show the involvement of each in Jesus’ journey of suffering. Jesus himself shows only abandonment to the will of his Father. The flowers, front and back, become familiar to us as we follow the Journey.
