Jesus meets his Blessed Mother
As the child’s father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Look, he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign of contradiction – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’ (Lk 2, 33–35)
My mother and my brothers are those that hear the word of God and keep it. (Lk 8, 21)
Lord Jesus, as Simeon blessed you in infancy he also foretold your mother’s suffering. Mary stayed with you throughout your passion, her pain and sorrow beyond our comprehension. In confidence, we call on her to comfort us also, at the hour of our death.
Loving Lord, may the sword of the Spirit that is the Word of God pierce my soul and lead me to true wisdom. I ask you to give me the courage to hear and bear witness to the Word of God, keeping it faithfully, so that by your grace I may be worthy to be called brother or sister to you.
As church we walk together the journey of faith, with Mary at our head. We honour her not only as your mother and your first disciple, but as Mother of the Church, your mystical body. May she be there to help me bring you to birth in my world too.
Lord Jesus Crucified, have mercy.
